Hi Darrell,
I have received sad advice that Robin J.R. Pennock Commander RAN Retired passed away suddenly on 22/12/05 here in Adelaide. His funeral will be held on 29/12/05 @ 1400 at the Church of Holy Innocents, Sheoak Rd Belair SA. Contact Phone No 08 82728555.
Robin is well known to most Techinical saiolors who served on HMAS Stalwart.
Should the HMAS Perth Association wish to express their sympathy to Mrs Pennock and his Family, I will be attending the funeral as a representative of the TPI Federation, and would be happy and prepared to do so.
In his most recent years Robin has coordinated TIP training for Welfare and Pension Officers from all ESO's in a very dedicated and friendly manner as most Sailors would know.

If I am not mistaken Capt JW Stead was the CO of Nirimba when we passed out in July 74.

Very sad to hear about Captain Stead. I remember him well from Nirimba. He almost stopped me from getting married the first time.
The guys in 7th term put the piss on for me in the Mess a few days before I was due to get married, and the party got a little out of hand. I was Vice Captain of 2nd term at the time, and the guys thoughtfully rolled all the guys in my term for me (and 1st term) after they'd thrown me into my cabin (plus put a handfull of peas, carrots etc on my pillow), and after they'd told the Duty grunter to f*%^ off when he told them the mess was late in closing.
Captain Stead was watching the carnage from his house, and ended up chasing a few of the culprits through 1st term after he arrived on the scene - didn't catch any.
Next morning all of 7th term were fronted and Joe gave us a real tongue-lashing. It was going reasonably well until he asked if we thought it was funny, him having to chase hooligans through 1st term - Brian Moseley, still pissed from the night before (like half the term), burst out laughing while Stead was standing in front of him. I thought Captain Stead was going to have a heart attack then; turned a dark shade of purple and had trouble screaming. Finally got to call Moseley a horrible little man, and gave us all stoppage of leave for a week. I was getting married during the week, so I had to get special leave for the day. Why couldn't he have knocked me back?

I received the following e-mail from Bill Krause this morning.
Alan Humble Ex Petty Officer HMAS Hobart D39 - Ist deployment 1967 passed away 1700 4/1/06 at Geelong Public Hospital. He was a good shipmate and a brave man. Alan was also on board HMAS Melbourne when it collided with HMAS Voyager. He assisted in the treatment and care of the survivors.
I served with Alan in 1969/70 at Creswell. I remember him as really fun loving bloke who was a mad Collingwood supporter. We shared many cheers and beers back then and I was really saddened to hear of his passing.
Rest in peace old buddy.

Phil served on BRISBANE on the 1977 Jubilee Trip to the UK and again in 1979.
He had Vietnam Service on HMAS SYDNEY and HMAS VENDETTA in 1965 and HMAS HOBART in 1968
Passed away 21st December,2005, in Brisbane, much too young and as a result of Asbestosis
Blue skies and gentle breezes, wherever you may roam. Rest In Peace.

I knew Phil and his wife Jayme quite well. Phil and I were on some Tartar courses together in Mare Island, Vallejo in 1979. After they extended our time (unaccompanied) to 47 weeks, convinced Phil (after a long drinking session in the Chief's Mess) that we should call the Embassy and withdraw as volunteers for the last course unless they decided to change it to an accompanied posting (Accompanied???? In California!!!!!!! I must have been the one who was pissed ). There were no spare Tartar Chief's around, so they begrudgingly agreed.
We had an interesting year. A couple of the funnier highlights:
I got stopped at the gate by the Marine guard and his trusted pistol whilst trying to outrun the base cops to Vallejo and freedom (of course I was pissed - I had to drive, there was no way I could walk), and Phil drove by waving and chortling, only to get home, open his electric garage door, drive in and drive out (forgot about the brake). I got let off by the cop, partied on in town and got laid, so I had the last laugh.
At a local restaurant, run by an ex-bordello owner from Sonora and Solano counties, she (Juanita, a huge woman with enormous boobs and wearing a loose dress) walked up behind me after a little playful dialog, and dropped a boob on each shoulder and asked what I thought of them. Just about broke my collar bone. Jayme was a little straight-laced and looked horrified. Juanita caught her look, and sidled around the other side of the table and hovered around Phil for a while. Then she pulled a tape measure out of her dress pocket, stuffed it up Phil's crutch and said,"It's alright fella, I still measure my men by the inch, not the pound!" Poor Jayme just about fainted. We had a great night..........the parting gesture was serving dinner mints out of a douche bowl.......class act.
Phil was a great guy who loved an ale or ten, and a good laugh. He was definitely taken far too young, and by a nasty disease.
Fair winds and smooth seas old friend, wishing you perfect missile shoots in the next life.

Sad to hear about Phil. taken so young. I was in the same PO's mess on Melbourne around 1972. I think he used to live at East Lakes in Sydney at the time. Remember driving him home one time.

I agree Bob, Phil was a great guy. I served with him on the Brisbane and I remember a "session" with him in one of the messes in Pearl Harbour when he spent about 3 hours trying to explain the Tartar system to me without the least bit of sussess.
We had lots of laughs and he was a great bloke to run ashore with. I am Phil's age and it is certainly too young to be taken from this world.
