Yes, he never backed away from an issue.
He wasn't alway right, but the vast majority of the time, he was spot on!
He sure rattled the sabres of the PC brigade.

who lead the Victorian RSL for 23 years, as a proud Australian who worked hard for our
veterans.
Mr Snowdon said Mr Ruxton’s passion for the welfare and wellbeing of Australia’s veterans was
clear, he fiercely fought for improved conditions and recognition for those who had served
Australia in our military.
“Bruce Ruxton served Australia on the battlefields of the Pacific and Borneo during the Second
World War and after returning continued his fight for those who served alongside him.â€

Sad to hear.
John was a PO Stoker when I joined "the college" working with Knobby Clarke. He served at Nirimba for a few years and posibly on moore than one occasion.
He was a Navy rugby rep and played Dempster Cup for Nirimba.
When he reired from playing he continued as a referee for many years.
A gentleman from my recollections in all aspects.
Rest your oars John, may smooth seas and fair skies be with you on your journey.

An absolute gentleman for sure. Served with 'Long' John on the Stalwart (I think) but never the less I do remember him.
Rest up Mr Silver, your task is done.

was my first Chief Stoker on Sydney in 1964
great man had a great sense of humour and was a very good rugby player

There was a good send off for John.
The Chapel was well and truly over flowing. Apart from family and friends, there were also reps from his local Lodges, RSL and HMAS Sydney Assoc.
After the ceremony I managed to have a chat with Bob Auston and Rod Jacobs, both ex-Sydney.
