G'day Peter,

Sadly, RADM Peter H DOYLE CBE RAN (Retd) crossed the bar on 2 May after a long battle with prostate cancer.

He was resident in Cabrini Palliative Care Unit in Brighton VIC for a few weeks prior to his death.

RADM Doyle was the CO of PERTH(2) for her first Vietnam Deployment back in 1967.

Filip Vanderwal

Yesterday I went to the Funeral of Filip (Dutchy) Vanderwal.
Fil Passed away (aged 56) last week from Brain Tumors.
Fil joined the RAN as a JR in 1966, trained as an Electrical Mechanic Power, later to become LEMP. I first met him when we joined HMAS Sydney together in Feb 1969. I lost contact over the years and he rang me last November and we agreed to catch up in the new year for a coffee. In January he was diagnosed with his tumors and spent the rest of his time since then fighting for his life. We never did get to have that coffee.

Passing of mates

I'm a new member to this site and I must say it's great. I have been reading of people who have passed the bar of recent times and would like to pay respects to two sailors that passed not long after graduation from Nirimba, One being Seaman MTP Mark Farroll, who was a passenger along with me in a MVA Oct 80. We were in the same intake July 1978 (13th Muppets) Mark was well known for his rubgy skills and represented the Navy apprentices including interservice in his chosen sport.
Another was a birdie Shane Parker, I am not to sure of the details but was told he was on his motor bike. Shane was a major team member of the under 21 and interservice football team. (Aussie rules) He was posted to Nowra at the time of passing.

I only heard of it when I was still at Nirimba. So that would mean it happened in 1979 or 1980, once he had passed out from Nirimba. As I said I only heard of it happening and if Shane is indeed still with us, I sincerly apologise.

Yeah, not sure what the story is here. I worked with Shane (if it's the same Shane Parker) in mid 80's. Could be a furphy?????

I remember Shane (he was a senior when I was at Nirimba).

From memory (if it's the incident I'm thinking of), he was returning to Albatross and a car pulled out of the Braidwood Rd intersection in front of him... his bike buried into the passengers door.
