Just some info on that Sea King Photo with Shark 02 (zero two). It was our aircraft from HMAS Success, the first full time embarked Sea King. We came down especially to Albatross for the photo to be taken. They didn't even have enough pilots for all the aircraft, so they put an observer in the front seats with a pilot! My heart goes out to all concerned, especially all serving an ex-serving 817 people. We've all been delt a vicious blow, May they rest in peace

I share all your thoughts and sadness at this terrible loss of life.

In terms of the accident itself I know it will probably come out in the end but one thing helos of this size are known for, is slamming into the deck for no apparent reason.

The actual reason is that at about 30 feet altitude their rotor wash starts forming a circular pattern in effect the downdraft reflects off the ground is projected skywards and suckin by the rotors again.

Once this circular pattern forms there is nothing to keep them in the air - even old Isaac Newton could have predicted this if he'd known about helos.

All you have to do is ask the yanks how many Sea Stallions and A40s they've lost through the same cause.

I guess this is optimism on my part but I'm sure the boys and girls in 817 were doing a sterling job keeping these babies in the air.

1. THIS SIGNAL IS TO UPDATE YOU ON THE DETAILS OF THE NATIONAL
SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING (PREVIOUSLY REFERRED TO AS THE
NATIONAL MEMORIAL SERVICE) AND TO INFORM YOU OF THE
ARRANGEMENTS FOR CONDOLENCE BOOKS.
2. THE NATIONAL SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING FOR THOSE KILLED IN
THE CRASH OF SEA KING SHARK 02 WILL TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY 15
APRIL IN THE GREAT HALL OF PARLIAMENT HOUSE. THIS IS AN
OPPORTUNITY FOR MEMBERS OF THE ADF AND THE GENERAL
PUBLIC TO REMEMBER THE DEAD AND PRAY FOR THEIR FAMILIES,
WHO WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE.
3. THE SERVICE WILL COMMENCE AT 1100 AND IS EXPECTED TO LAST
APPROXIMATELY ONE AND A HALF HOURS. DUE TO THE LARGE
NUMBERS EXPECTED, THE SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS AT
PARLIAMENT HOUSE AND THE LIMITED CAR PARKING SPACE,
PEOPLE WISHING TO ATTEND ARE ADVISED TO ARRIVE NO LATER
THAN 1015. THOSE WHO CAN CAR-POOL OR TAKE PUBLIC
TRANSPORT ARE ENCOURAGED TO DO SO TO HELP EASE
CONGESTION.
4. RIG FOR THE SERVICE IS S2 WITH MOURNING BRASSARD.
MOURNING BRASSARDS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE GREAT HALL
FOR THOSE UNABLE TO SOURCE THEM ELSEWHERE.
5. WHILE SPACE RESTRICTIONS MEAN ONLY 200 SEATS HAVE BEEN SET
ASIDE FOR NAVY, OTHER NAVY ATTENDEES MAY ACCESS PUBLIC
SEATING, AND THERE IS SOME STANDING ROOM IN THE GALLERIES
ABOVE THE GREAT HALL FOR THOSE UNABLE TO BE SEATED.
ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE ALLOCATION OF THE NAVY SEATS WILL
BE ADVISED SEPARATELY.
6. GROUPS AND ORGANISATIONS THAT ARE ABLE TO RELEASE THOSE
WHO WISH TO ATTEND, AND ARE RESOURCED TO DO SO, ARE
REQUESTED TO SUPPORT THIS OCCASION.
7. CONDOLENCE BOOKS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PEOPLE TO SIGN ON
COMPLETION OF THE CEREMONY. CONDOLENCE BOOKS WILL ALSO

It is with regret that The HMAS BRISBANE Association advises of the passing of a shipmate.

R64677 POMTP Phillip Edward “Sparrow” Daniels, 56, in Western Australia, on Sunday 10th April, 2005.

Sparrow Daniels was part of the commissioning crew of HMAS BRISBANE and went to Vietnam on BRISBANE in 1969.

He also went to Vietnam on MELBOURNE in 65/66 and on SYDNEY in 1972.

His funeral will be 0930 on Monday 18th April, 2005 in South Fremantle.

It is my sad duty to advise that shipmate Ron Dale formerley of Wynnum North, Queensland, has today crossed the bar.
Ron (known to many as Ron Barker) was an ERA in the Jan '59 intake.

Through a chain of e-mails that passed through the hands of early MOBIs Jim and Myrna Tolley, Charlie Bradbury, Clarry and Jenny Williams, Lou and Michelle Sullivan, Jan Totman, Phil and Adeline Parr, Max and Val Ramsay, Brian and Leanne Inall and David Twiss, most of whom were the 8th Term Senior Apprentices when I was a 'sprog' at Nirimba, it is indeed a sad loss that Ron 'Woof' Barker (who changed his name to Ron Dale by Deed Poll,) has finally rested his oars after seccumbing to a prolonged battle with bowel and liver cancer.

Those of us from the 13th MOBI Intake and earlier will remember 'Woof' well, as will those who served with him out in the Fleet... Our sincere sympathies go out to 'Woof's' partner Judy and those in his family surviving him...

I'd like to thank Peter Maher, Secretary of the HMAS Brisbane Association for bringing 'Woof's' passing to our attention...

It is my very sad duty to advise you that a friend of mine and also members on here that Greame Hill died peacefully at Caloundra hospital in pallative care. His funeral will be on Monday 20/6/2005 at Gregson & Weight on Wises road Maroochydore at 1.00pm.

Greame was in HMAS Nirimba's 2 muppet intake January 1973. he served on Stuart and then Derwent. He paid off LSMTP3. I severd with Greame on Derwent and worked with him when we were in Gove NT together. He was the quickest sprayer I had, he could put a full front on then off before I had my hand coming down. Vale Greame you will be missed.
